Beginner Modeling

Oisis:

I was looking for a place to start modeling. I am a beginner, so where do I start?

Mr. Agent:

  Dear Oisis,

The best place to start is by making sure you are informed about getting started in modeling. You can do this by reading the various pages here on our website www.sdmodel.com. Basically, don't spend any money, atleast in the beginning, and apply to as many agencies as you can.

Getting Started

Anonymous:

I am interested in acting and modeling. Please direct me to one of your agents.

Mr. Agent:

  Hello,

Please follow the links on the homepage and they will tell you who to send your images to.

Scarred

McKenzie:

I have a slightly visible scar on my cheek from a dog bite when I was seven. I am 15 now. It is barely visible and you have to really try to see it. Can I still be a model? I am 5'11".

Mr. Agent:

  Hi McKenzie,

I would not let that little scar stop you from applying to the various agencies. Most likely it can easily be covered up with makeup and most shots will not be that close anyway. And at 5'11", you may be runway model anyway.

Getting Started With Modeling and Acting

Vivian:

How exactly do you begin a modeling/acting career if you haven't done anything similar prior? Do you start with acting classes or plays?

Mr. Agent:

  Hi Vivian,

You mentioned both modeling and acting. They have very different approaches to getting started in each of them. For modeling, read how to get started here on our website and submit to as many agencies as you can. For acting there are not as many restrictions on getting into the profession. If you are talking about becoming a Hollywood start then plan on moving to LA or New York and making it your full time ambition. There are many websites to help you get started in acting. If you just want to act in some plays or productions in your town then find out who is producing them and what the requirements are to audition for them.

Modeling Costs

Hailey:

How much would it cost exactly?

Mr. Agent:

  Hi Hailey,

Basically "it" should cost nothing, zero. follow the advice on our site and produce your own photoshoot and submit those photos. Then after you are accepted by a modeling agency, use the money you make from modeling for things like zed cards and better pictures.

Over 50 Years Old

Terry:

What agencies book women over 50 years old for modeling work?

Mr. Agent:

  Hi Terry,

We do! Just submit as outlined on our website.

Good Model Agency in San Diego

Gisel:

Hi, I would like to know a good model agency in San Diego.

Mr. Agent:

  Hi Gisel,

Well, I've thought a lot about this, and yes, we are a good agency. Submit to us and see what happens.

Becoming a Model Agent

Daniel:

I would like some advice on how I would go about becoming a modeling agent.

Mr. Agent:

  Hi Daniel,

That's great that you are thinking about becoming a model agent. Let me first say that I hope you have a thick skin- you are going to need it! If you are willing to move then I would try applying at all the agencies around the country, emphasizing LA, New York, and other big cities. Most agencies have active intern programs like we do here at SDMM. See if you can apply to be in one of these programs and it might be a way in. Good luck!

Model Agency Scams

Samantha:

How do I know if an agency is trying to scam me before I sign with them? Is there a website to tell you if an agent is legit?

Mr. Agent:

  Hi Samantha,

The best way is really pretty simple. Don't pay any money upfront. This will weed out 99% of scams right away. If any agency wants you, there is really no need to pay anything. For your pictures, check out our page on preparing your photo submission for more information.

On the Side Modeling

Andrew:

Is modeling something that can be done on the side while maintaining a full-time career?

Mr. Agent:

   Hi Andrew,

If by full time you mean you will not be able to take time off for go-sees and auditions, then the answer is it will not be possible to model at the same time.
