What's
a reasonable cost for signing with an agency? I want to avoid being ripped off?
Mr. Agent:
A reasonable cost for signing with an agency is $0. Agencies worldwide make
their money in the same way. By charging the model a commission on the work
they get the model, (normally around 20% in the US), and, charging the client
who books the model a service fee, (also around 20% in the US). When an agency
advances some expenses such as photos, hotel, or travel the model is expected
to pay the agency back once he or she starts making money. Therefore there is
no reason to charge a model any up front fees or charges simply to be with an
agency. If a model agency is combined with a school then sometimes they will
charge for training and/or pictures. However be aware that anyone can submit
their pictures to most model agencies for free.
