K.P.:
Hello, My name is K. P.
I have been modeling since I was 17 years old. I have shot with quite a few
photographers and have done a few promotional jobs as well. Now, my career is
really blooming and I am being requested for catalog shoots as well. I have
decided not to do TFP anymore with the different photographers that contact me.
However, how much is too much? I don't want to overcharge them for a photo
session but I also don't want to undercharge. I know I take good pictures and
when a photo session is done, both me and the photographers have PLENTY of
pictures that are usable. What do you suggest?
Mr. Agent:
Because you are being requested for catalog shoots there is really no reason at
this point you should be doing trade for pictures, (TFP). The only reason a
model should be doing TFPs is at the very beginning of their career when they
need pictures in order to market themselves to agencies, or clients if they are
freelancing. Once a model starts to get paid jobs they should simply use the
"tears", (pictures from the shoot), to supplement their portfolios.
If a photographer wants to do a photo shoot with you it can go one of two ways.
If it's a TFP the answer is no. If it's for pay your standard rate should be
$150/hr. If the photographer is shooting for a client then there might be usage
fees involved also. Find out if the photo shoot is only for the photographer's
promotional material or if it's for a client. It will make a difference in how
much you charge for your services. Hint: it's more if it's for a client. The
$150/hr rate is standard in most markets in the US. If you live a more rural
area or smaller town then, obviously your rate will be lower.
