(Crosby, so cute!)
My first encounter with PR Couture
was one of love at first sight. Okay, this may be a bit of an
exaggeration, but to say the least I was in dire need of a reliable
fashion pr resource--that combined the professionalism of the public
relations industry, with the lure of haute couture fashion. PR Couture
is every fashion pr aspirer’s must-read; it opened my eyes to the sheer
force of Web 2.0 and this whole online world of fashion pr.

I
assumed that Crosby Noricks had to be living somewhere in Manhattan
with her incredible fashion knowledge and her cutting-edge posts,
however, when I conducted further research, I was stunned but
thoroughly pleased to find out that she was located in San Diego. As a
junior at UCSD, engineering and mathematics rein the school, and
fashion-loving, communications majors like myself are few and far. So
of course, I was determined to get in touch with Crosby.

When
I got a taste of the daunting world of fashion professionalism through
my internship at San Diego Model Management, my intern supervisor and
CEO of SD Model, Fred Sweet, proudly revealed that the founder of PR Couture writes some critiques for the Fashion Calendar blog. It was evident that Fred was flattered by the fact that such an esteemed figure as Crosby chose to contribute to his Fashion Calendar
blog. The fact that Fred knew Crosby made me so excited, this was it,
fashion networking, exactly what I wanted from an internship.

I
became increasingly fixed on meeting Crosby when I heard that my
co-worker, Maggie Leung, met Crosby via a PR mentor-networking event.
Clearly, this coincidence could only mean that it was time to email
Crosby and profess my obsession with her and her amazing blog consisting of tips and tricks on fashion public relations.

I was apprehensive about whether Crosby (founder of PR Couture
and Social Media Strategist at Red Door Interactive) would actually
have time to meet with me, but sure enough, within a prompt 24 hours,
Crosby replied!

We
met at an edgy coffee shop in Downtown San Diego, Café Noir, (which I
would definitely go back to for its ambiance). Crosby strolled in from
work in a stylist black dress and purple scarf wrap, and I wasn’t
really sure how to act, after all, this was my very first stint in
networking.

Crosby
was super personable, which made me much more at ease, we chatted about
everything from graduate school, home décor, magazines, life after
college, and of course PR Couture.
It was such a beneficial experience because I came in with no
expectations, but to take advantage of the opportunity to learn from a
professional at the pinnacle point in her career. I am certain that
Crosby with her top industry blog, thousands of twitter followers, and
innovative knowledge will revolutionize the industry someday, if she
hasn’t already!

No,
I didn’t get a job from this meeting, but I got an enlightened
perspective on my dream career in fashion PR. I didn’t wake up one day
and say, I want to work in the fashion industry because I want to live
“la dolce vita,” but rather, I wanted to combine my passion for public
relations, marketing, and fashion --- glamorous life, or not. Crosby
further revealed the need to prepare for at least a year of grunt work,
entry-level treatment, and a Devil Wears Prada reality.
Nonetheless,
I remain determined to pursue this dream and embarking on this journey
that will hopefully take me to my final destination, Vogue, or
something like it.
